The First Day

Updated: Feb 27, 2023

Last night, I ordered 120 posts and two miles of 14 gauge wire. It should arrive today, and I will begin the process of planting a vineyard. I ordered 250 grafted Riesling vines last year for a spring delivery, which is now only a month away. I hope they will do well in our cool coastal climate.

I have never grown grapes or made wine, but am excited to learn. So much of historical literature assumes the reader is intimately familiar the process, that I think it will be most satisfying to understand and experience it myself.

Wine production in the region that is now Israel has a long and storied history that predates the time of Jesus. The Israelites were known to have made wine from grapes grown in the area, and the Bible contains many references to wine and vineyards.

During the time of Jesus, the production of wine in Israel was a thriving industry. The Roman Empire had conquered the region, and the Romans were known for their love of wine. The wine industry in Israel had already been established for centuries, and many different grape varieties were being cultivated, such as Sorek, Marawi, and Jandali.

The wine produced in Israel during this time was primarily red wine, which was made by crushing grapes and allowing them to ferment in barrels. White wine was also made, but it was less common. Wine was an important part of Jewish culture and was used in religious ceremonies, such as the Passover Seder.

There were many vineyards in Israel during the time of Jesus, and the wine produced in the region was highly prized. In fact, some of the most famous wines of the time were produced in Israel, including those from the regions of Jericho, Hebron, and the Galilee.

It is also worth noting that during this time, wine was not typically consumed in the same way as it is today. Instead, it was often mixed with water to create a weaker beverage that could be consumed throughout the day without causing intoxication.

Today I will embark on a centuries old tradition, and will share my experiences along the way.
